On the Student Movement in Barak Valley

Understanding the development of a society and delving into student activism at a particular period requires an understanding of the concept of student power. But student activism is a complex phenomenon, and there is no single theoretical model that describes it fully. Nevertheless, the historical context may provide an appropriate framework for analysing a student movement. Hence, this article will put forward some general perspectives on student activism in Barak Valley in Assam and will try to comprehend the role of the ACKHSA in its initial decade against the historical backdrop of the origin of the movement.

Diversity, Democracy, and Dissent: A Study on Student Politics in JNU

Qualitative and quantitative evidence collected over the last four years (2014–18) at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus reaffirms the crucial contribution of the institution’s diverse and democratic base to Indian politics. The authors suggest that JNU promotes a diverse yet inclusive campus, gives space to radical voices not only from the organisational left movement but across the political spectrum, and finally upholds a tradition of dissent which is in line with protecting the rights of free speech and promoting the values of democracy.

Targeting Institutions of Higher Education

The ideology central to the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has no space or use for liberal thought and values. Education for such organisations means only what can be called a kind of catechism. This is a memorisation of a narrow set of questions rooted in faith and belief and an equally narrow set of answers that prohibit any doubt or deviation. Therefore, educational centres that allow questioning and discussion are anathema and have to be dismantled.
