Child Undernutrition in India

The child undernutrition estimates from the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey, 2016–18 reveal that many Indian states have made substantial decline, reversing their poor past record in wasting, ranging from 7 to 14 percentage points within just 30 months. Is it really possible to make such a large decline in such a short span of time? Or, does this point to an anomaly in data or estimation?

An investigation of undernutrition and suspected starvation deaths in a few selected villages of Barwani district in Madhya Pradesh, a chronically drought-prone region, has thrown up a number of issues impinging on the concepts, methods and processes used for measuring of malnutrition and starvation.

If the poor have no money to purchase foodgrains, the public distribution system (PDS) loses all relevance for them. It would serve the poor far better if the huge sums spent on the government's procurement operations and the PDS were devoted to water conservation programmes and pension schemes.

The recent starvation deaths may have focused the limelight once more on Orissa's adivasis and triggered off a spate of developmental schemes. But for the adivasis, deprivation and poverty have been their lot for decades, bereft as they are of even basic necessities like food, minimal education and electricity.
