Two Countries, One Corporation and Its Intellectual Property Rights

Monsanto is known to throw tantrums when it does not get the kind of protection it wants from governments for its intellectual property assets, threatening to leave countries if they do not provide it. This has happened in Argentina and now in India. These may look like country-specific disputes on genetically modified seed technologies, but there is much more than what meets the eye.

High Stakes in Agro Research

In a country where the majority of the population depends wholly on agriculture and agro-related activities for livelihood and survival, seeds and agrochemicals are critical inputs, whose control must lie with the people. At least two attempts have been made in the past - the first one between 1980 and 1985 and the second in 1981 to control our agrochemicals business. We are now seeing a third attempt being made to control the seed business. Some lessons from the past.

Performance of Bt Cotton

Results of small field study in selected locations in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, two of the six states that have been granted permission to commercially cultivate Bt cotton - the first genetically-modified crop to be cultivated in India.

Cotton : Survival Struggle

An attack by the American bollworm pest is feared to have caused considerable damage to the cotton crop in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The news has distressing echoes of the incidents of 1998-99, when failure of the cotton crop due a bollworm attack resulted in suicides by hundreds of farmers in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. As early as July, Punjab Agricultural University experts who had visited the cotton-growing areas of the state had observed the pest feeding on the cotton plants. This year acreage under cotton has gone up in all the three states. In Punjab, cotton cultivation has expanded by almost 1 lakh hectares, in a shift away from paddy to diversify agriculture. Yet the estimate of cotton output for the 2001-02 (October-September) crop year is being revised downward from the record 17 million bales (of 170 kg each) forecast earlier.
