Progress in Reducing Child Under-Nutrition

Assessing the progress made in reducing under-nutrition among children who are less than two years old in Maharashtra between 2005-06 and 2012, this article points out that child under-nutrition, especially stunting, declined signifi cantly in the state during this period. It holds that this decline can be associated with the interventions initiated through the Rajmata Jijau Mother-Child Health and Nutrition Mission, which began in 2005, and that this indicates the critical role the state can play in reducing child under-nutrition in India.

Bal Thackeray

Bal Thackeray, the son of an anti-caste reformist, came from a background rich in learning and culture. Yet, he chose to use his learning and wit to destroy rather than create. Under his direction, the Sena resorted to intimidation and terror, first against south Indians, then communists and Muslims.

Eviction of Landless Tribals in Ahmadnagar

In yet another incident that gives the lie to laudable pieces of legislation like the Land Ceiling Act 1961, and to other constitutional provisions that extend protection to weaker sections, several landless adivasis in two tehsils of Ahmadnagar district were evicted from land they had cultivated for some years now.

The Missed Centenary of Balaji Huddar

Maharashtra evidently does not need its heroes. The birth centenary of Gopal Mukund Huddar has come and gone with scarcely anyone remembering him. From being a 'sarkaryawaha' of the RSS, Huddar went on to fight in the Spanish civil war and join the Communist Party of India. He ended up being not entirely acceptable to both the worlds he traversed. But that does not matter in the final analysis. In our dismal and post-ideological times the memory of somebody like Huddar can keep the principle of hope alive.

Maharashtra: Quiet Burial of Right to Information

The right to information has been legitimised in Maharashtra for over three years but suffers from numerous exemptions and exceptions. There appears to be an attempt to privatise the concerned departments to put them out of reach of the information law in order to protect widespread corruption.

Abortion Services and Providers' Perceptions: Gender Dimensions

This paper explores the gender dimensions of abortion-service providers' perceptions of women who access such care. A study in two districts of Maharashtra indicates that providers' responses to abortion situations are shaped largely by their attitude towards women, to women's health care and especially to abortion care. These attitudes in turn influence women's access to abortion and to the quality of service.

Primary Healthcare in Urban Slums

A look at the poor status of healthcare for urban slums in Maharashtra, and the differences between rural and urban areas of the state in terms of delivery of healthcare services.

Maharashtra: Able Handling of Recent Riots

Although there have been some serious communal incidents in the state, the government's able handling and that of local community leaders has played a significant role in limiting the damage. Only in the absence of community leadership as in Sholapur recently has the situation threatened to get out of control.

Lord Ganesha Yet Again!

A play was staged in this year's Ganesh festival in Delhi. The speaker of the Lok Sabha seemed to have liked it. Soon after the play was done in Mumbai. The current culture expert in the capital city of the Marathas, Uddhav Thackeray, did not like it. He wondered how such a play could have been performed in the festival. The episode is yet another example of a phenomenon of Maharashtra's cultural life - that of extragovernmental censorship, much more damaging than governmental censorship.

Deteriorating Primary Education

The Maharashtra government's decision to institute a new public examination at the end of the fourth year of primary education, which will be compulsory for students of all government-aided schools, cannot be expected to make any difference to the admittedly deplorable standards of primary education in the state when the government has no plans to meet the woeful shortages of trained teachers and essential school facilities.
