The Karnataka State Universities Bill, soon to be presented, will put in place a framework for slowly diminishing the autonomy of the universities. In the process of placing Karnataka on the IT map, college teachers and academics are getting the short shrift.

How UGC Handles Higher Education

The Centre for Advanced Study in Mathematics at the University of Mumbai was established in the early 1960s. It was closed down by the UGC in February last year. The manner in which the decision was taken and the UGC's refusal to disclose, much less discuss, the reasons for the decision illuminate the functioning of the UGC as the apex organisation of higher education in the country.
