COVID-19 and Female Unpaid Labour

The Covid-19 pandemic and the associated lockdowns have added to the unpaid household labour for women. However, to what extent is this event unique in doing so? In this article, we try to place the impact of the pandemic in the broader dynamics of household work performed by women. The article discusses the consumption-driven pressures in the household, alongside the increasing marketisation of women’s work in the domestic space.

Overcoming the China Conundrum

Narratives of the new Cold War and the “liberal” West versus “authoritarian” China are neither adequate to grasp the political economy of contemporary China, nor do they explain global contradictions. More importantly, such narratives serve to obfuscate the reality of political and economic challenges faced by the vast masses of the developing countries as well as advanced capitalist countries.

Russian president Vladimir Putin faces the mind-boggling imperative of having to integrate Russia's economy with that of the world economy. At the same time, it involves a shedding of old mindsets and long-held notions of the Soviet economy. Russia now has to work towards a three-pronged approach - ensure its territorial integrity; create favourable conditions for economic recovery and growth and yet preserve the civil society and the rights and freedoms that all Russians have come to enjoy.
