Indian public sector banks (PSBs) have long been a fertile field for experiments in human resources (HR) management. Before the nationalisation of major commercial banks in 1969, these experiments were triggered by the unionisation of bank staff.

Settlement of wages and service conditions of staff in 1966 through an agreement between the bank management represented by Indian Banks’ Association and the national-level unions of workmen was the first major experiment. For officers, such a system began in 1985. This kind of bipartite relationship continues to be followed till now.
