There has been a growing interest in the lives, careers and contributions of early professional Indian economists. Some of it was triggered by my own work, published in 2009, on several of these economists, including a few who were more or less unknown to the present generation. I had also attempted to show that many of them were adept at using economic analysis to understand Indian problems and to anticipate the later work on development economics. P J Thomas (PJT) was one of the economists I had identified and credited with being the first (in 1935) to use the multiplier to argue for public works in India in the context of agrarian depression.
E M Thomas appears to have been unaware of my work published in 2009. It was around the time when he started working on the life and contributions of PJT. He spent about 10 years working on a biography and on preparing a companion volume comprising a collection of PJT’s major works. It is these two publications that are reviewed here.
