Protecting the Rights of the Dead and Their Kin
The new bill of the Rajasthan government sparks a crucial discussion about the dignity of the deceased.
The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly passed a bill on 20 July 2023 that prohibits the family members of deceased persons from using their corpses for protests on roads and other public places. The bill also guarantees that every deceased person has a right to a dignified and timely funeral according to their community or religious traditions. The bill comes in the wake of a surge in incidents of relatives holding demonstrations with dead bodies.
The Rajasthan Honour of Dead Body Bill, 2023 might be the first of its kind to be enacted in India. According to the law, anyone who displays a dead body on the streets, outside police stations, or any other public place for the purposes of protests can be punished with imprisonment ranging from six months to five years and a fine.
