Cultivating Inclusivity in Social Spaces

In August 2022, the Tamil Nadu government, under the direction of the Madras High Court, drafted a glossary of terms to address the LGBTQIA+ community. The people of the community have welcomed this initiative. In connection to this, in June 2023, they came forward with a list of pleas to the state government to promote their lives by introducing specific changes in the system. Their pleas intend to recreate the binary space to be more accommodative and flexible so that the non-binary genders can experience an inclusive lifestyle.

The activists of the community placed “horizontal reservation for LGBTQIA+ community in education and employment” as the foremost plea to the Government of Tamil Nadu. They have disapproved of the prevailing reservation system that offers them opportunities based on their caste identity alone. It discloses that the community looks forward to reservations based on gender identity as well. They presume that such a reservation policy will fetch them more opportunities and help them to establish their gender identity pridefully amid the stereotypical narratives. Their second plea is to “replace the term thirunangai with thirunar in the title of the welfare board run by the Tamil Nadu government.” The term “thirunangai” denotes solely trans women and excludes trans men; therefore, the gender activists have pleaded with the government to consider replacing the term with “thirunar,” which covers both trans men and trans women. This plea intends to promote the Tamil Nadu transgender welfare board to be more inclusive. The third plea is to include trans men in the welfare schemes framed for thirunangaigal, so that trans men also receive its benefits. The gender activists problematised that the district social welfare department employees are unfamiliar with the trans men’s identity; therefore, they are pushed towards not availing the government’s welfare schemes.
