Rajasthan: A Front Runner towards Right to Health

Socialisation of the healthcare system and its fi nancing by a public agency is essential to establish the right to health.

In Canada, the right to healthcare began in 1947 in the Saskatchewan province and it was only in 1957 that a national legislation for universal access was adopted wherein the federal government assured 50% of the health budget for each province. Rajasthan has become India’s Saskatchewan by passing the Rajasthan Right to Health Act, 2023 on 21 March. With general elections due in 2024, this development has catapulted healthcare as a priority electoral issue and a number of other states like Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar are already discussing it.
