Small Voices of Agony and Agitation

Thumb Printed: Champaran Peasants Speak to Gandhi, Vol 1, edited by Shahid Amin, Tridip Suhrud and Megha Todi, jointly published by National Archives of India, New Delhi and Navajivan Trust, Ahmedabad, 2022; pp 307, `500.

Two eminent scholars and a young associate have scoured the National Archives of India (NAI) to place before us 378 original testimonies dated 1917 (izhār/bayān) of contracted indigo peasants (raiyat) from 50 villages of Champaran. Honouring the tradition of archival research, scholars have put together a rare collection of peasant voices, who chose to place on record the onerous conditions of their existence as indigo cultivators. The work is the first of the nine-volume series that seeks to publish thousands of such early 20th century subaltern testimonies.
