From 50 Years Ago: Who Cares about the Drought?
Vol VII, No 46 November 11, 1972
Pannalal Surana
The effects of this year’s drought in Maharashtra have been compounded by the fact that this is the third successive drought year in the state. According to official estimates, out of a total of about 35,000 villages, 23,000 villages in 21 districts in 1970-71 and 15,000 villages in 20 districts in 1971-72 were affected by scarcity. This year, once again, the rainfall has been very low, particularly in June and July. In Sholapur district, rainfall between June and September was only 3 inches, as compared to the normal level of 15 inches.
