Does a mandatory vaccination policy, as a social welfare measure, impinge on personal liberty?
In several states across India, administrative authorities have passed orders proposing incentives or “coercing” people to take the vaccine against COVID-19. On 25 June 2021, Meghalaya, through various orders of the deputy commissioners, made it mandatory for shopkeepers, vendors, local taxi drivers, and others to get themselves vaccinated before they could resume their businesses. An order issued in Chhattisgarh, dated 26 May 2021, asked all its officials and staff to ensure that they either get themselves vaccinated against COVID-19 or stand deprived of their salaries for the month of June. Elsewhere, people were denied their rations without proof of vaccination.
