Israel’s Impunity, Continued Occupation and Palestinian Resistance

The recent Israeli aggression in Gaza Strip has drawn the world’s attention to the plight of Palestinians once again. The fact that Palestine has remained under occupation for decades, despite the claims of triumph of democracy and human rights, has exposed the nexus between imperialism and global narratives woven with the aid of popular media. The same media is, yet again, trying to twist the facts to vilify the victims of occupation and their resistance against it. Such attempts need to be countered by putting the Palestine–Israel question in a proper historical perspective.

The 11-day long Israeli aggressions in Gaza in May killed close to 250 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and caused massive destruction of the civilian infrastructure, including health infrastructure. These aggressions in the time of the global COVID-19 pandemic have once again attracted the world’s attention to the question of the occupation of Palestine. Palestinians were absent from the “mainstream” discussion for long due to the Israel’s successful campaign to make it appear a simple law-and-order issue where it portrayed itself as a “victim” of Palestinian “terror.” Israel has also enjoyed impunity for its crimes in the occupied territories due to its close strategic relations with the United States (US) and the European Union.

Using hegemonic control over international media, Israel has been able to manipulate the narrative so well that Palestine’s status as the last major colonial dispute was almost forgotten. The tragic Gaza offensive has opened up a crucial space and highlighted the reality of Israeli occupation all over again in front of the world community. It has generated a necessary interest among the new generation to look into the campaigns, such as Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) with a fresh perspective. The assertive young generation in the occupied Palestinian territories is challenging the established discourse, which may shape the future of the movement in a decisive way.
