An Alternate Narrative of Agrarian Transformation in India
Whither Rural India? Political Economy of Agrarian Transformation in Contemporary India: A Festschrift for Venkatesh Athreya edited by A Narayanamoorthy, R V Bhavani, R Sujatha, New Delhi: Tulika Books, 2019; pp xxii + 242, ₹950.
Whither Rural India? Political Economy of grarian Transformation in Contemporary India is a timely publication that discusses the very important question of agrarian change in India in the larger context of economic transition and changing policy directions. This has been the major research concern of Venkatesh Athreya for whom the festschrift is dedicated. The collection brings together essays, on agrarian transformation in contemporary India from a heterodox political economy perspective by some very well-known names in the field. In my view, the book deals with three inter-related aspects of rural transformation in India. I discuss the chapters of the book in that order.
