‘Tis the Season
In Chennai, December is known as the “season” when over 1,000 concerts of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam are organised.
December presents a unique “season” in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is known as the December (Music) Season, a time when over 1,000 concerts of Carnatic music and classical dance are held at over two dozen venues across the city. These concerts present the best, as well as the young on stage, with concerts starting as early as 8 am and ending well past 10 pm. And, between concerts are lectures, talks, and everything one can curate that is related to the performing arts.
For the connoisseurs of classical music and dance, this is the time of the year to seek long leaves and reorder their lives to attend these concerts. And, for many Indians who live abroad, this is the time to fly down to make the best of the Christmas holiday season and soak in the music. It is said that Chennai’s December Season is perhaps the biggest such art festival in the world.
