From 50 Years Ago: Canada’s New Premier
Vol III, No 16 APRIL 20, 1968
Canada’s New Premier
The election of Pierre Elliott Trudeau as the new Canadian Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party, to replace Lester Pearson who retires at the age of 70, was, in a sense, inevitable. If Canada as a nation was to survive, it had to have a leader who was, in the first place, French Canadian and in the second place, a confirmed Federalist who could effectively challenge Quebec separatism. Trudeau is both, which will explain why a man hardly known to Canadians outside Quebec till two years ago and totally unknown to people elsewhere in the world has been rocketed to position and fame.
