Politics of Martyrdom


In tracing the cultural roots of modern nationalism, the eminent theorist of nationalism, Benedict Anderson, in his classic book, Imagined Communities (Verso, revised edition, 2016), reminded us that “no more arresting emblems of the modern culture of nationalism exist than cenotaphs and tombs of Unknown Soldiers.”

In our time of hyper nationalism in India, the state and the dominant media continuously remind us of the martyrdom of soldiers, as is evident in the recent case of death of soldiers in the terrorist attack in Kashmir.
