The Enigma of Alternative
It is worth reflecting on what exactly is wrong with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ruling alternatively in Tamil Nadu. The commonsensical discontent appears to be absorbed by the pendulum swing of change of governments. Hence, the critical sense now demands an alternative to such a containment of change.
After a hiatus of three decades, the incumbent ruling party has returned to power in Tamil Nadu though with a thinner majority and lesser margin of difference in vote share. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its ally Congress make a formidable opposition. While this calls for an analysis of what is changing in the power equations between the two rival regional “Dravidian” parties, DMK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), as has been done by Krishna Ananth (2016), there is something else that cries for attention in terms of long-term consequences: the pre-poll expectations around the third front and the absolute drubbing received by it.
