After the loose cannons of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—Sakshi Maharaj, Giriraj Singh, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Sadhvi Prachi, Sangeet Som, Sanjeev Baliyan and the like—were successful in dividing Indians along religious lines through their hate campaigns around “love jihad” and “ghar wapsi,” they have started “beef politics” to further spread venom against the Muslim community and isolate them. They do not know that India is one of the largest exporters of beef and what is largely sold and eaten in India, or exported, is not cow meat but mostly buffalo meat and carabeef obtained from water buffaloes. But these fringe elements assume and insist that cows are being slaughtered and beef consumed by Muslims only, ignoring the fact that beef or buffalo meat is eaten not just by Muslims but by Dalits, Christians and many Hindus too.
