A Silly Con
"Will no one rid me of this troublesome Nehruvian legacy?"
From this week EPW will carry the occasional editorial of satire and wit on current affairs topics. “A Silly Con” is the first such editorial.
Last Sunday, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, concluded another glittering global tour with a visit to the United States (US), the pièce de résistance of which was a meeting with assorted heads of Silicon Valley technology firms followed by a reception in his honour with the Indian–American community.
The meetings with tech stalwarts, including several prominent Indians and Indian–Americans, were much anticipated in India, if overshadowed in the US by the visit of Pontifex and the continuing farce of the battle over the Republican nomination. As the hot ticket item for the Indian–American community, the reception for Narendrabhai was wildly oversubscribed, so to speak, with over 50,000 people requesting passes for about 18,000 seats.
