Modi's China Visit

“History Challenges Modi in China” by Manoranjan Mohanty (EPW, 30 May 2015) is a candid piece of writing that accepts the positive impact on India due to the visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China. India’s position vis-à-vis China is well reflected, linking cultural and trade issues. Trade and commerce, in the present age of globalisation, is a major factor in the foreign policy for any nation, India being no exception. The regional organisations of Asia also further strengthen this cause.

However, the aspersions with regard to India’s closer relations with the United States (US) should not be looked at with suspicion by the Chinese. Gone are the days when a nation’s foreign policy was solely determined on the basis of political factors. Twenty-first century geopolitics is more determined by economic factors than political issues. For this, business leaders are increasingly accompanying the Prime Minister on his foreign tours. Hence, any such suspicion by the Chinese with regard to India’s US policy is unwarranted.
