Defend the IITs
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are widely acknowledged as premier academic institutions both in India and across the world. Today, it would be hard for anyone to deny that the success of the IITs, instituted by an Act of Parliament in the 1950s, has largely been due to the autonomy of functioning they have enjoyed under successive governments.
The rare resignation of an IIT director with two years of his tenure still to go, under circumstances that are far from transparent, is therefore a matter of grave concern. This disquiet is not, or should not be, limited to the faculty and staff of the IITs but involve all those to whom the integrity and strengthening of our educational systems matter.
