Dismantling of the Planning Commission is easily one of the most controversial decisions taken by the new Bharatiya Janata Party-led government. While doing away with the Planning Commission had been talked about since the regime-change in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an official announcement in his Independence Day speech when he stated, “We will replace the Planning Commission with a new institution having a new design and structure....”
Going by media reports this will be done in a hurry. As the newspapers reported, the name of Yojana Bhawan is set to be history with the building that houses it on Parliament Street getting a new name soon. The government also reportedly indicated that it wanted to “pause” the five-year plans and scrap the mid-term review of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan.
