Financial Inclusion

This has reference to the article entitled “Bank Preference for Financial Inclusion in Rural Punjab” (EPW, 26 July 2014) by S S Sangwan. Based on the findings of the study, the author has concluded that commercial banks may be the preferred option for financial inclusion over small banks. He has also indicated that since this is true for Punjab, this may be true for other rural areas of the country.

According to the Rangarajan Committee Report on Financial Inclusion, the regional rural banks (RRBs), with more than 14,000 branches, represent a powerful instrument for financial inclusion. The role and relevance of RRBs in financial inclusion may be noted from the following facts:
