Amidst the excitement of Brazil 2014, few realise that the football World Cup is the biggest single gambling event of the decade.
One of the more entertaining sub-plots around all football World Cups – not excluding Brazil 2014 – involves the office sweepstakes.
Every office worth its sporting vein proffers one driven by a football/odds nut and (mandatory requirement) Excel sheet wizard. The sweepstakes in my office came about, its controller-in-chief says, “out of sheer boredom”. Running the sweepstakes helps him follow results and maintain “some sort of artificial interest” in the Copa. The home of modest bets and immodestly huge bragging rights was created after 15 minutes on Excel.
