Caste Violence

Your editorial “Fighting Caste Fighting Patriarchy” (EPW, 20 July 2013) brought out the various intricacies in the Indian social system. My submission is that not only can inter-caste problems trouble India’s development, but they can also block progress. Class divisions play a very crucial role in aiding social tensions. Instead of contributing to the betterment of their fellow caste people, the erstwhile discriminated replicate their harassment on them. Divisions within divisions keep dividing the nation.

The Dharmapuri tragedy proved that there will be no end to caste wars. Caste has been used by people to assert superiority over others. In this case, the Vanniyar community, who were once ostracised, took up arms to eliminate the dalits. This trouble is not going to end here. Many more social tensions will emerge, of course, with an underlying political background.
