Attack on Presidency University, Kolkata

Attack on Presidency University, Kolkata

On 10 April 2013, Presidency University, Kolkata was attacked multiple times by groups of armed hooligans from outside bearing banners of the students’ wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress. These armed thugs broke into the university grounds, viciously assaulted students and teachers, and ransacked various parts of the university, including the historic Baker Laboratory. Media reports have identified well-known Trinamool activists from the area as being present during this unprovoked and unprecedented attack. According to the vice-chancellor of the university, the policemen on duty inside the campus at the time remained mute spectators while this rampage was going on.

We, the undersigned alumni of the institution, condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. We stand in complete solidarity with the vice-chancellor, students, teachers, staff and administrators of the university, who have taken a united stand against this vicious assault on one of the foremost institutions of higher learning in India. We demand of the state government that the attackers be immediately identified and punished, and adequate security be provided to prevent the recurrence of this shameful incident. We call on the Mentor Group of the University, and alumni of the institution publicly associated with the current state administration and the ruling party, to issue unambiguous public condemnations of the incident, lest their silence be construed as complicity and encourage further attacks on their alma mater.
