Anxieties of Democracy: Tocquevillean Reflections on India and the United States edited by Partha Chatterjee and Ira Katznelson (New Delhi: OUP), 2012; pp xiv + 310, Rs 750.
Anxieties of Democracy is a volume of nine essays edited by Partha Chatterjee and Ira Katznelson. It seeks to understand the anxieties that confront the young, and not-so-young complex democracies of India and America. The volume seeks to use Alexis de Tocqueville’s comparative work on French and American democracies, outlined in Democracy in America (DA), to similarly offer critical reflections on Indian and American democracies in contemporary settings.
