Class Matters

A Response to Shiv Visvanathan

Class Matters

In his commentary (“Once There Was a CSDS”, EPW, 29 December 2012, Vol XLVII, No 52), Shiv Visvanathan writes about me (“a repetitive Marxist”) who asked the “same” question at the end of each seminar at the Delhi School of Economics: “What about class?” – a question which bored and irritated Ashis Nandy. Nandy had no tolerance for bores, we are told, and once Visvanathan found him hiding in the men’s bathroom apparently to escape bores.

Visvanathan’s comment about the Friday seminars at the D-School involving me, Nandy, and himself is a public matter and I want to briefly respond to that. I will confine my response mainly to the following issues. First, the questions I asked. Related to that is the larger question of class (read Marxism) and Sociology. Finally, the question of Emergency rule and intellectuals.
