Clean Chit to Tamil Nadu

It is rather surprising to see the flawed and rather startling, etymologically slanted piece, “Modi’s Gujarat and Its Little Illusions” (EPW, 8 December 2012) by Neera Chandhoke. While rightly commenting on the lack of human development and minority rights in Gujarat, it is disappointing to see the clean chit given by Chandhoke to Tamil Nadu, which, in spite of its economic success, is a haven for crony capitalism and massive corruption. The comparative paradigm would have been more balanced if the Kerala model had remained the only model to highlight.

When the author is a leading political scientist, it is extremely curious as to what prompted her to gloss over the disastrously populist competitiveness fuelled by the dodgy business deals of both the leading political dispensations in Tamil Nadu. We expect to see more fair and less misleading articles from her pen in the future.
