From 50 Years Ago: 'Handling' the Chinese

Over the past week, we have again been reminded that decisive decision-making is not a prerogative which the Prime Minister has grabbed for himself. This heavy responsibility is repeatedly thrust upon him by weak, overcautious colleagues whether in the field of foreign affairs, economic policy or defence matters... This was brought home sharply during the course of a military reorganisation on the NEFA front where the Chinese have been attempting to do a Ladakh on us.

I am referring specifically to the creation of a new army corps under the Eastern Army Command to defend the central and eastern sectors of the Sino-Indian border – a decision which underlines our determination to defend the McMahon Line. The new army corps will take over from the old, somewhat extended, corps, which will now confine itself to the defence of the borders of Tripura, Assam and West Bengal with East Pakistan….However, the reorganisation in NEFA was vitiated by a deliberate ‘leak’ in the D­efence Ministry which sought to make out that a special ‘task force’ had been designed to deal with the Chinese infiltrators…
