Misplaced Criticism

The commentary by Sanjay Gubbi “Are Conservation Funds Degrading Wildlife Habitats?” (EPW, 26 June 2010) is based on his experiences and observations in different sanctuaries and national parks in Karnataka. The author has not consulted the forest department and the chief wildlife warden of the state before finalising the commentary, which is full of misrepresentation of facts.

In fact, the commentary came to my knowledge after I went through the report of the Elephant Task Force. In para 5 of Annexure V at page 150 of the report, the construction of new roads in Nagarahole National Park is termed as an error on our part. As no roads have been laid recently, this is a definite error in the report.
