Appeal from Labour Party, Pakistan

Labour Party Pakistan, working for a socialist and democratic Pakistan, has put up Mian Abdul Qayum, a textile worker and labour leader to contest the Punjab Assembly constituency, 63 Faisalabad. In the recent past, he led a 20-day strike of textile workers under the banner of the Labour Quami Movement that resulted in a victory for the workers. Over 10,000 workers got social security cards, there have been wage increases, blocked back-wages have been released, workers are now allowed to register trade unions in their units and most importantly, this strike restored the workers’ dignity.

Mian Abdul Qayum’s main opponent is Asif Ajmal of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) who was once arrested by the police for firing on workers of his textile factory who were demanding wage increase and union rights. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Rana Aftab is a rich peasant and lawyer.
