Aptitude and Civil Services Exams

This is in reference to “Reform of Civil Service Preliminary Examination” (EPW, 27 February 2010) by Maruthi P Tangirala. The nature of the examination to select candidates for the civil services should induce an urge to appraise critically the current problems and also discover new facets of problems, their genesis and repercussions and seek appropriate solutions.

The proposed reforms as recommended by the Administrative Reforms Commission are timely. It is heartening to find that the Civil Services Preliminary Examination shall be rechristened the Civil Services Aptitude Test. Aspiring candidates will be tested on the basis of decision-making skills and not a long list of optional subjects.
