Statement on Lalgarh

We express our sense of deep shock and horror at the continuing war on the people of Lalgarh by the state of West Bengal, duly backed by the union government. More so because it is now over a month old and there is no commitment whatsoever to stop the offensive and find an amicable solution. The offensive continues despite the public outcry in Bengal while the government builds up its antipeople propaganda in the official media, doing its best to divert the focus from the people’s struggle against injustice and oppression.

It goes without saying that other than the usual horrors inevitably accompanying such warlike armed operations, the fact that it has been unleashed on its own people shows up the profound failure of the democratic state to discharge its central mandate of looking after the interests and welfare of its people.
