While welcoming the Indian people’s decisive verdict against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, we would like to note that only 28 Muslims have been elected to the 15th Lok Sabha, whereas according to their share in population (13%) they could have expected 72 MPs.
The average percentage of representation for the earlier 14 Lok Sabhas was about 53% of the expected share. The present representation of M uslims is the lowest ever, even lower than that in 1991 and 1996 when the country was under the cloud of the Ayodhya movement.
