Fighting the Clerics

The newspapers have reported that Begum Shanaaz Sidrat, president of Bazm-e-Khawateen, is contesting from the Lucknow Parliamentary seat. The Bazm-e-Khawateen is a 75-year-old outfit that works for the empowerment of Muslim women. As expected, and unfortunately, she has been opposed by religious bigots who have issued fatwas against her saying that a veiled “pardanasheen” woman cannot contest elections.

She has acknowledged that she is “facing holy wrath” (from the clerics, who have in the past not hesitated from issuing the most regressive and ridiculous fatwas) and has added that “Muslim women and their issues don’t fi gure in any political party’s agenda”.

We should support brave women like Begum Shanaaz Sidrat rather than the candidates of corrupt, compromised and criminal political parties like the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party, etc.
