In defence of 'Lokniti'

On the eve of the 15th Lok Sabha elections, political scientist Yogendra Yadav has reminded us that evidence from India suggests that electoral democracy is not the preserve of the rich and well heeled. He noted in this context that the socially disadvantaged have learnt to use the vote as a weapon and this “participatory upsurge” from below has defined the character of Indian democracy in the last two decades or so.

Medha Patkar and Amit Bhaduri, on the other hand, have recently pointed out that the faith in existing paradigms of development is deeply shaken and the time is ripe for a new beginning. In their words,
