From 50 years Ago: The Indian Road to Socialism.

Weekly Note from Volume X, No 43, October 25, 1959.

There is a lull in the season of arrivals and depart ures... But only for a while, for over t he route from Palam banners have already appeared announcing a welcome to the delegates of the IATA Conference. Once again Vigyan Bhavan will look out on the flags of the nations, the bars in the hotels and restaurants come to life and Delhi’s tireless hostesses wander from cocktail party to cocktail party explaining yet again the absence of snakes, Maharajas and fakirs to another congregation of eager enquirers from faraway countries...Everyone, in short, should be happy except those chickens not yet educated to the conviction that the “tandoor” is the end of all their journeyings; chickens and unregenerate socialists.

For the former we have no words other than of consolation, for the latter the lull gives time and opportunity for heartsearching thought.
