Nineteen-Fifty-Seven was the first year since independence when New Delhi was preoccupied with domestic issues.

Today, as when India emerged as a free nation, the outside world seems to have rediscovered the importance of India and of her way of life. If ten years ago free India was hailed by the comity of nations as the natural leader of Asia, today her achievements in democratic planning are more widely appreciated. There is greater recognition in the world outside that the failure of democratic planning in this country may mean more than frustration among the Indian people.
