Agricultural Growth in West Bengal
I am in a way delighted to read mention of “Operation Barga” in the letter written by Anand Chakravarti and Uma Chakravarti in EPW (March 17, 2007).
Several politicians have forgotten that West Bengal was a pioneering state successfully undertaking bold land reforms. Therefore I would not easily dismiss the agrarian policies of West Bengal government as “bad policies” as the Chakravartis do. There has been documented evidence that “Operation Barga” was successful and did help in accelerating agricultural production in West Bengal.
