Manu Shroff
I recently came to know of the demise of Manu Shroff from D G Patel (I G Patel’s brother who lives in the USA), which led me to reflect about the friendship of IG and Manu many years ago at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA). In that spirit I later read the recent article by Deena Khatkhate (February 3, 2007) about Manu and again I remembered him and IG. Manu and I were colleagues at IIMA for more than a year when IG was director. Before IG and Manu joined IIMA, the institute was going through a crisis caused by the staff union.
I recently came to know of the demise of Manu Shroff from D G Patel (I G Patel’s brother who lives in the USA), which led me to reflect about the friendship of IG and Manu many years ago at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA). In that spirit I later read the recent article by Deena Khatkhate (February 3, 2007) about Manu and again I remembered him and IG. Manu and I were colleagues at IIMA for more than a year when IG was director. Before IG and Manu joined IIMA, the institute was going through a crisis caused by the staff union. Faculty morale was low, particularly when J R D Tata’s visit as the chief guest at the convocation had to be cancelled because of a strike and gherao of the then director by the staff on the same day. I do not know how, but certainly IG and Manu, within a year of joining IIMA, were able to win over the striking employees.
Joining IIMA was in a way coming down the ladder for both IG and Manu at that time, considering the positions they had held before, but their involvement helped maintain our “peer culture” during the crisis period. Both IG and Manu will be missed by many of their friends.
