Road Density, Resource Intensity and Efficiency in National Highways of India: 1958-1997

This paper investigates the state of national highways in the country in both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. It attempts a diachronic and synchronic study of the road density of national highways, and resources used thereon across 16 major states. It studies the relative development of road density and resource intensity over the years, and juxtaposes these parameters against the human development index and the state domestic product, thus comparing the infrastructure development of the states with their social and economic well-being.
