The Right Choice    These are exciting times in medicare. Remote cardiac care on the Himalayan foothills from a sophisticated Delhi hospital; or in Lakshadweep from a speciality centre in Cochin; or in a remote village in Orissa from a superspeciality unit in Lucknow. An old villager with an eye problem? Medical diagnosis and management is at hand via video conferencing facilities from a commercially operated e-booth in the village. Telemedicine is the current buzzword and to facilitate the implementation of telemedicine systems a working group has been set up in the ministry of communication and IT that will develop standards for digital information exchange and processing. This is envisaged to provide the basis for a nationwide telemedicine system in the coming decade. Health for all will take on an entirely new meaning, as rather disturbingly will the doctor-patient interaction and relationship.
