WEEKLYECONOMIC AND POLITICAL Towards a Review Whether it is described as a response to a challenge, or simply a gesture of condescension, the fact is that the TRIPS Council saw fit to call a special meeting on access to medicines for the first time, as part of its regular review in Geneva earlier this month. Convened at the request of the African countries, the meeting described as only to facilitate an exchange of opinion appears to have initiated a process that may well see greater flexibility and manoeuvrability brought into the TRIPS (trade-related aspects of intellectual property) agreement. If things move at the current pace, an optimistic assessment is that the Doha ministerial meeting of the WTO in November will see the inclusion of a political statement on TRIPS and public access to medicines.
