School Lunch : Unpalatable Carrots

Unpalatable Carrots The Calcutta Municipal Corporation recently decided to suspend the midday meal programme in all its primary schools. The reason cited by its mayor was that such meals (100 gm of bread per day) were not needed as students already received three kg rice a month, in a scheme funded by the central government. While the decision is seen as being political, it focuses renewed attention on the continued tribulations of the midday meal scheme introduced with laudable aims but that has in very many states today, invariably run aground.
