Indian Labour Conference:Missed Opportunities

The Indian Labour Conference is a potential site for useful deliberations among labour, government agencies, policy-makers and NGOs, especially in the current context of the many changes taking place in the industrial and employment sectors. Unfortunately, this year too, the government was content to make a ritual of holding it - making pious statements rather than proposals and steering clear of passing any constructive resolution.

The 37th Indian Labour Conference was held on May 18 and 19, 2001 at Delhi. The agenda for the Conference included four items of which social security for workers was one.

The note on the subject described briefly the existing situation of social security in India and indicated the lines on which the social security cover could be extended. For the organised sector it was proposed that:
