J C Kumarappa

J C Kumarappa's is a forgotten name, even among economic theorists and environmentalists today. But the fact remains that this expert on economic and financial matters in the Gandhian era was the pioneer of 'Non-Violent Economics'. The author of Economy of Permanence and the editor of Gram Udyog Patrika, he laid the foundation of 'the economic basis of sustainable development' and 'eco-friendly technology'. His attempts at focusing the attention of India's scientific community on the problems of the rural poor through the All-India Village Industries Association were unique. Any attempt at redefining 'development' would remain incomplete without a serious appraisal of JCK's work on the subject.

Throughout his life, JCK shunned the limelight. Our ingratitude towards the contributions of this far-sighted genius (coupled with the national malady of disregard for documenting and preserving history) has thrown him into oblivion. As a result, most of JCK's writings are unavailable. There is hardly any material about his life and work.
